“... Manter’s work in painting is brimming with a lyrical intensity fuelled by a passionate involvement with landscape, mapping and weather systems. Her work often starts with a disarmingly casual gesture-fingers traced on wet window, feet “drawing” on vast expanses of tidal flats only to be washed with the next tide. These quotidian gestures are photographed and become a sedimentary layer in works which seem to exist in weather systems of their own-as distemper (hide glue), paint and ink are vigorously rained down or poured, and layers of collage are stacked into thick, geological surfaces with the translucent density of a quartz crystal in rain.”
